I know the author of The Mystery is not as naive as he appears at times in this article. All diplomacy, including US support for Israel and Saudi Arabia is based on self-interest. What is this administration?s self-interest? Oil. Cheney is Halliburton?s man. Bush is Cheney's man. Securing the Arabian Peninsula against Iran is what passes for American diplomacy today. Is that a policy success? Bush removed Sadam Hussein as a threat to Iran from the west, and the Taliban to Iran's north. Bush set the sleeping Iranian Lion free. Condie's trip to Israel is window-dressing for the November elections. When Bush loses Congress? protection expect two years of investigations and possibly impeachment. With this administration distracted and off the international playing field, at that time it will be up to Israel and her neighbors to find the courage to face their own fears, and the fears of their neighbors, and to meet at the peace table.
