as Americans once thought history began in 1776, so do Israelis think of 1948 - Comment - Israel News | Haaretz Daily Newspaper

It has only been in the past 50 years that Americans have come to terms with the fact that another people lived on the land before European arrival. This is because the truth was finally admitted and voices so long silenced were finally heard. Now it is quite normal for Americans to feel remorse for what was done. Israel is far from reaching this acceptance of the truth and even further from feeling any remorse for what was done. In watching Netanyahu, I am amazed at how he speaks of things that are mythological as fact and couches it with such sincerity. The history of Israel is open to all now, thanks to the worthy efforts of the New Historians along with the woefully late realization that the Palestinians are quite capable of speaking for themselves. But in the schools of Israel, the mythology heard from Netanyahu is still taught as fact and the settlers truly act as if they believe they are God-sanctioned. That this tiny faction of humanity is able to command the policy of the one superpower is profoundly frightening. One might as well have demanded Cochise, Geronimo and Sitting Bull admit the right of the US to take their land as demand HAMAS recognize Israel. That such is considered a "starting point" for peace is absurd because it is a forthright denial of historical fact and a demand that the dispossessed acknowledge their dispossession as right and just! Native Americans should be flocking to the occupied territories to support the Palestinians with the words "never again!" on their lips.
