Despotic men and regimes rise to power in the shadow of a silent press. It is the duty of every journalist to tell the truth. Those who don't are traitors. However, if it is any consolation, the state of the Israeli press is echoed around the world. A once honourable profession seems to be dedicated not to telling the truth but telling people what they want to hear in order to sell more papers. Thanks in great part to the Murdoch empire the press has become an arm of the entertainment industry, dutifully recording in minute detail the lives and loves of the famous (most of whom are famous only for being famous and not for any talent). Shame on journalists - but an equal shame rests on the public who buy these lies.
