I personally met a rabbi who carries a side arm. In my opinion people underestimate the dedication, discipline and prudence that it takes to become a rabbi. This is only my opinion, however, my experiences in Iraq have taught me how unpredictable and dangerous fanatics can be. Religious institutions have been attacked in this country and if a rabbi becomes licensed to legally carry a firearm I see no problem with that. Synagogues, Churches, and Mosques seem to attract violence from the mentally disturbed, and fanatical nuts. I don't think the congregation should all be packing but the synagogue is a sacred place to Jews and they should feel safe to practice as any other religion should. I have trained young people in escalation of force in the military as well as the use of deadly force and when it is necessary. In summary, if the rabbi is legally licenced, trained and proficient, let him carry, perhaps just the general knowlege that rabbis pack heat will keep the nuts away.
