It's common knowledge that conquerors at the time exiled only the leadership and the priests (those who could legitimely claim a right to govern and lead a rebellion). Conquerors were interested in levying taxes so they needed the people to stay to work the land. It's likely that the large majority of jews never experienced the exile, were integrated into the larger babylonian, then roman, then byzantine then arab cultures. Yes the ones throwing stones today are the descendants of who israelis claim to be descended from, how ironic. This is common knowledge and is a point of vue defended even by some Israeli scholars. Of course, hard core zionist can't accept this because it would be a strong argument against zionism.
