Abbas is absolutely correct about two things. (a) Settlement building is a clear sign of the insincerity of Netanyahu. (b) There is no way that Israel would ever leave the Jordan valley if there is not a clearly defined time limit. Think Oslo and you see exactly how successive Israeli government have avoided their obligations without being held to account by the US. We know that Obama knows these things. But we also know that Obama, folds under the pressure of the pro-Israeli lobby in US politics. Until now Kerry appeared to be the first US "honest broker" in the post-Oslo period, and given the massive personal investment he has made it is hard to believe that it is he who is giving in. Abbas presumably believes this too and is giving Obama a final chance to show leadership. But unfortunately we are probably just seeing the preparations for a US exit from "the process" where the Palestinians will receive a large slice of the blame. But only US politicians and blinkered Israelis will believe it.
