It's my understanding that the reason archaeologists question Josephius' story is because they only found the remains of three humans, and not hundreds as the story says. Acknowledging this fact doesn't mean anyone's saying that Jews didn't live in Israel. I wonder what really happened - could the people have gone somewhere else instead and found a new stronghold? Could the 'survivors' have been a cover? Could the soldiers have been, rather than shocked by death, amazed at a fantastic disappearing act? We may never know what really happened, but uncritical thought is a worse fate.
