One can often understand the positions a man takes if one is aware of certain facts in his biography. In Irving's case, I will point to two. His father was a British naval officer who after surviving being torpedoed in the Arctic, seems to have decided he was going to live the rest of his life as he saw fit and abandoned his family. A young Irving later appears to have found friendship and acceptance as a factory worker in the Germany of the post-war boom. I think you can see these twin facts driving much of what he has written and said.
