The history of the Bush administration will be even uglier in the history books than it is in the media because the events put in motion will have had time to play out. The timing is right for a "perfect storm" in American mideast policy. All that is needed is a trigger. If Bush doesn't give the Arabs some real and rapid progress, in which Israel makes some real and rapid concessions, then there will be the devil to pay. If the result of Annapolis is more Israeli promises based on a number of "qualifiers" which must be attained, in advance, by the PA, then we will see a colossal failure, especially as Israel will consider itself the judge of the Palestinian progress. If Bush was hoping to save his reputation with this conference, he had better deliver.
