It perplexes me why public figures around the world cite mental anguish as a basis for lenient sentences after convictions. Surely the same “anguish” would affect any private citizen. It is, after all, the disapproval of one’s family and friends that should affect people more than the opprobrium of the public, unless Katsav is thinking of running for office again! Aussie Eli – yes a sordid affair but not one that embarrasses anyone but the culprit and anyone who shielded him from justice. Nothing in this episode for Israelis, nor Zionists, to be ashamed of nor, indeed, should the transparent and effective prosecutorial process shield Israel from criticism of its policies where such criticism is warranted. Finally, I note with interest the change in terminology. Previously many posters spoke of Israel being the only “democracy” in the region. Now, with change on the way (hopefully unstoppable) we see a change to “stability” being the measure of virtue!
