    When Mahmoud Abbas addressed the South African parliament recently Israel was the scapegoat for everything that has gone wrong. The world has thousands of years of training in "blame the Jews" and only a few years of "Islamophobia." We have a phrase down here in the South African Jewish community which aptly describes the Israeli government: "matzah pudding" - pudding is a rich dessert, matzah the bread of affliction. If Abbas wants more Israelis to come forward who care like Gidi Levy about ending Israeli infliction of suffering, we need to see more than blaming the Jews. We need to see that Palestinians are not so self-destructive in the way they wage their struggle. There is nothing stopping the Palestinians from being positively constructive and waging their struggle at one and the same time. They definitely have it in their power to determine the flavor and consistency of the matzah pudding with an Amir Peretz & S. Peres in the mix, if they really want peace and prosperity.
