'There’s a unique place of pique for the Israelis in certain places in the administration' hovering over negotiations, expert tells New York Times.08:55 29.04.16 | 0 comments
"will Israel agree, in advance, to withdraw from Shaba Farms, if Syria transfers an official document confirming it to be Lebanese," - Barel Barel is taking the Syrian position for granted. But he forgets that Syria has some interests here. Syria's main interest is to get back the Golan. That is why it stirs trouble in Lebanon and supports Hizballah. (Syria has other interests too, unrelated to Hizballah.) If Hizballah is dismantled militarily, Syria loses its ONLY means of pressuring Israel. If dismantlement of Hizballah is an outcome of Shabaa Farms handed over to Lebanon, then Syria will refuse to do it. They will say: we said before the area belongs to Lebanon, but only to encourage Hizballah. We are not giving our land away. Barel somehow thinks that Syria will give the Shabaa farms to Lebanon so that Israel can keep the Golan to itself. Better think again.
