Article doesnt mention Keun's brilliant 'Child of All Nations',(english translation by Michael Hoffman, Penguin Classics) 1938, written at the time of her liaison with Roth (who died in 1939). This novel is written in the persona of a little girl , daughter of a feckless, cosmopolitan writer (allegedly based on Roth) who with her mother is left at various hotels in France as surety for payment by the writer. Utterly delightful, with undercurrent of sadness.
