In every modern state there is separation of religion and state. An exception is in the Arab Countries, Israel and the Vatican. In all these countries there is an unhealthy mix of politics and religion and, bearing in mind that religion is man-made and not divinely created, it has the weaknesses inherent in man. This explains pedophilia in the Catholic Church, corruption and cartels in the Israeli Rabbinate and the extreme powers of the Muslim clergy in the Arab states, where there is no accountability to the public. People should have the right to choose their own rabbis to lead them, including Conservative and Reform rabbis, who should have equal rights to marry couples as the Orthodox. The latter are a bone of contention with the secular public in Israel and have done more to divide the Jewish People than unite them because of outdated halachic laws not in keeping with the modern world.
