No one doubts that young Israeli soldiers are capable of tremendous acts of courage, are capable of taking initiative and are able to think outside the box. But the downside of having an army of teenagers is that they include people who will do crazy things if no one stops them. Young men with guns need discipline. That's as true when we are talking about weapons safety as it is when we are talking about hazing or treatment of Palestinian Arabs. When HaAretz or others seize on an incident of abuse by a soldier against a civilian to start to theorize about the alleged "brutalization caused by the occupation" they should look back at this article and put it into context.
