For you commenters who don't know: Israeli society is actually very secular. Most Israeli Jews aren't even that religious. (Jewishness is both an ethnicity and a religion, so one be Jewish and secular at the same time.) What you're seeing is the secular Jews wanting to modernize society, and force the ultra Orthodox to participate their fair share (in taxes, the draft, etc), with a backlash from the ultra Orthodox who right now are exempt. It doesn't really demonstrate "hypocrisy" or "pigs" or anything of that sort, rather, it shows that Israeli society is actually secular and becoming more secular. The backlash from the ultra Orthodox is comparable to protests from whites in the South against desegregation reforms or protests from sanctity-of-marriage people when states legalize gay marriage. When a group's in the minority and their society moves to modernize, they protest against it.
