You are correct. When I lived in Ghazaouet (VSNA) between 1982 and 84, there was no such anti-french hatred. Furthermore many people claimed they were missing the jews as they lostb of lot of their own culture with their departure (music, gold craftmanship). True that some jewish cemeteries had been descrated (like in Ghazaouet) but not by the town inhabitant (who actually cleaned it up, when I mentioned my shock and outrage after discovering it). This new affair has more to do with the inability of the corrupt algerian governement to start an economy for all despite the richness of the algerian soil. It has especially to do with the ridiculous demand that France apologize, while crimes were commited from both sides during the independance war. You are right Algerian were talking very proudly about it and at the same time had no resentment toward the french people. This minister should also apologize for half the death inflicted by the governement during the civil war from 1992.
