Amos Oz can be considered one of the truly sage and sane prophets of modern Israel. This is a writer/ thinker who possesses the uncanny and extremely rare gift of not only penetrating the veil of superficial appearances of things, situations and people but also to predict with amazing accuracy the chain of events that will arise predicated upon human and/or political interaction. In addition to his incredible and far-sighted perspicacity he is also graced with a deep sense of morality and compassion which pervades all of his writing as well as his political views. The two most predominant features defining Oz are his love for his country - in particular for the vision of its potential yet to be fulfilled - and his love for the Hebrew language. We are immensely indebted to Amos Oz both for his literary contributions and for his life-long commitment to advancing the cause of peace and of publicly speaking out in order to perpetuate and safe-guard the democratic character of his country.
