tend to end up feeling closer to Israel. My kid was on a year long program, got to meet many israelies of different stripes, got to experience bureaucracy and frustrations, security scares, etc - but came away with a love for the land and the people, and a sense of Israeliness. My own impression is that Americans with not direct experience are the ones most alienated from Israel, not the other way around.
