Former Israeli prime ministers Begin, Shamir, Rabin, Barak, Peres, Sharon, and Olmert never insisted in their negotiations with Arab governments that it be a prerequisite to recognize Israel as a Jewish State. It is a prerequisite for Netanyahu because he is trying to curry favor with the facist (Putin wannabe) Leiberman who wants to imprison anyone who even voices criticism of Israel and Netanyahu is fearful he will leave his coalition and run against him. Everyone knows that Israel is a homeland for the Jewish people and it is common knowledge that in any final peace treaty with the Palestinians the right of return will be to a Palestinian State only, NOT to Israel. Of the seven million six hundred thousand people living in Israel 1.5 million are not Jews. The problem American Jews have is that the current prime minister is an opportunist and not a real leader. Real leaders don't rule by the polls or fear that an extreme right wing member of their cabinet will leave, but instead do what is in the best long term interests of their people. American Jews define ourselves as a people but that's not the same as defining oneself as a nation. I am an American and one of the 305 million American people, but I am also a Jew, and no one in my country is demanding I swear loyalty to the Christian Nation of America. For sixty two years Israeli's always referred to themselves as the Nation of Israel, but now that there are extreme right wingers in power anyone not Jewish is not welcome and any Jew who supports Israel but is for a two State solution, an Israeli and Palestinian State living side by side in peace, as I and most American Jews support, is branded a self hater, anti-semite and told "Israel doesn't need you" by the current government of Israel and their xenophobic followers.
