It is one thing to give up a higher standard of living in order to live in a society that at least has as its ideal the Utopia envisioned by Herzl in Altneuland. It is quite another to move to the only place in the world where those Jews who are not Orthodox are denied equal religious rights and where those in authority vehemently deny that the state is "a state of all of its citizens," which is, of course, the essence of any real democracy. With generational change, American Jews are turning into Jewish Americans, who have no more interest in leaving America than any other Americans do. Only the minority of American Jews who isolate themselves and have xenophobic attitudes towards non-Jewish Americans are likely to emigrate. Not surprisingly, when they move to Israel, they retain their xenophobic attitudes and vote for parties that share them.
