Right now,for Rice, this whole situation of the Israeli/Pal conflict is a piece of the bigger picture. Of course a peace agreement now would counteract bad press on the Iraq issue but an agreement is secondary (and of course it doesnt look THAT promising either)to an American Middle East policy that seems to be counteracting Iranian influence. So here we have Abbas who suprisingly brought in Hamas and made his own bargaining position worse and Olmert, who now has a bona fide excuse playing to the tune of this more universal situation. A Shallit release should be happening soon to at least ease tensions but what will bode for the unity agreement, who knows? America has many issues on its plate in the whole area and seems to be working better with Europe lately with some of them. Iran is the main one and how it plays out between Abbas and Hamas,Hizbullah and the Lebanese Government,Syria,Iraq,Bahrain's shia and sunnis and the Saudis is anyones guess but we can look for some clues here
