'Forget about right-left, Orthodox-secular, capitalism-socialism. Fairness should belong to everyone,' protesters say in weekly demonstration.22:22 28.11.15 | 0 comments
During the last half of the 20th century descendants of Lebanese Christians constituted a significant though not large block in the republican party. Lebanon, created by France as a Christian enclave in the Levant following WWI, became a 'cause' for American politics and the USA found itself replacing France as Lebanon's sponsor. The sight of the US fleet leaving Norfolk for Lebanon in 1958 was impressive. For over 40 years the conflicting needs of Lebanon and demands of Israel have wrought havoc on US foreign policy. We dare not refuse Israel, nor may we be seen to abandon entirely Lebanon. All driven by US national politics rather than solid foreign policy.
