Suffered from a bizarre mental illness. it was born in the fact that most Americans were totally unaware and ignorant of what was happening in the world during the years before we were attacked by Japan. An important point, a combination of hubris and ignorance which turned into alarm and hysteria after the long telegraphed blow of Japan awoke the USA. Added to it was the belief after WW II that the USA was the invincible power which had technical and industrial prowess no nation could match. Then the Chinese Communists managed to beat the totally incompetent and corrupt Nationalists, the Soviets set off a bomb, and the lunatic regime in North Korea mortified Stalin by trying to conquer the south. The USA lost it. Duck and Cover time. A soviet attack was inevitable at any minute. Then Sputnik. . . . The USA was WAY ahead in missile technology and kept it a secret. . . There were many telling us that we had lost it, we couldn't cope, we were vulnerable to what ever insanely unlikely thing might happen. Israel and the USA are very different and curiously similar. Now, after Israel has had a really bad wildfire experience, well beyond anything it has experienced before, there are plenty of folks pushing their pet fears and personal projects. Israel is a small, not a mighty nation. It cannot afford everything necessary to be absolutely safe from every possibility. Not even the US might achieve that level of 'security.' Israel may only afford what it may. "He who defends everything, defends nothing." - Fredrick II. Israel may not defend everything, nor can it afford to try. Israel must not take counsel of it's fears. It must make it's responses proportionate to probable problems, and it's efforts balanced enough to be both affordable and balanced. Israel must not take counsel of it's fears. For cowardice always fails.
