Unfortunately, Israelis keep electing political leaders who care more about coming across as a strong, military victor than about what is in the long-term best interests of the country and all of its inhabitants. Negotiation and compromise are apparently not macho enough. Winner takes all. The problem is, with the current state of affairs, there are no winners and if it keeps up, there will be only losers. And no amount of hasbara will fix that.
