Yossi Gal ? I'm sure he's a nice man, but no one in France has the faintest idea who he is - and that includes the French press and French Jewry. Israel's embassy to France has been headed by such heavyweights as Asher Ben-Nathan, Elie Barnavi and Nissim Zvili, who appeared on prime-time French national television (speaking perfect French) often - and as often as they wanted. I have NEVER seen Gal once on TV here. His predecessors were revered by local Jews and were often present and greeted with great enthusiasm at major community events. If Gal showed up here anywhere among Jews (except perhaps with a very small group of major donors) I'm sure no one would recognise him. His past shows he is a competent professional but it was obviously a mistake to appoint him to Paris. He should have been - but is not - "The Voice of, Israel" to 60 million Frenchmen and "The Prince of the Jews" to the 600,000 members of the world's third largest Jewish community. And the most extraordinary thing is that he was born in - or is the son of parents born in - a community (Morocco) where virtually everyone spoke French! .
