Amazed et al.: The NI conflict was like the Arab-Israeli conflict. Sinn Fein and the Republicans wanted to forcibly destroy the province of Northern Ireland--the Protestants state--and unite it with the Republic of Ireland. It was the same as the Palestinian plan for a "secular democratic state." Making peace with Britain was just a side benefit for the British of the Republicans making peace with the Protestant unionists. While Sinn Fein/IRA are not Hamas, they are very similar to the PLO. Hamas isn't ready for peace, and probably won't be for decades. But the PLO probably is as it knows that it won't be beating Israel anytime soon.
