The difference between a leftist and a rightist in Israel is not the same as in the real world. In the real world, there is a center position in between right and left which is populated by centerists. In Israel the center of the political spectrum is far to the left of Israeli leftists. Centerists in Israel would be considered extreme leftists and would not be tolerated. Peres for his part is a moderate right winger, but is still quite close politically to the extreme right wingers. The point is that the difference between extreme right and extreme left is barely measurable.
