It is a great pity that no comprehensive biography of Allon has ever been written. He was the outstanding figure from the 1948 war and one of the great figures from Israeli military history. He was also an original political thinker, as the Allon Plan, demonstrates. Had he not died so young, he might have gone on to have had political triumphs comparable to that of his rival, Dayan, who died little over a year after Allon. In many ways both Allon and Dayan were more original thinkers than their proteges, Rabin and Peres. It was mainly luck and longevity that allowed Rabin and Peres to reap the rewards as peacemakers.
