Why would Barak go out to defend Netanyahu, a member of another party, especially when Barak is known not to care about human behavior? The reason is quite clear. Barak's own fake party, Atzmaut, is not expected to survive the future elections. To remain in the political scene, and especially to remain Defense Minister, Barak will need to join another party. The most natural for him is actually Kadima, but they don't like him. (Right now they like him even less, for maintaining the Netanyahu government.) So Barak plans to join Likud. He is collecting some IOUs from Netanyahu to help ease the process.
