Ali Salem has lost all credibility when he decided to get cosy with some Israeli right-wingers for purely selfish reasons. Although I don't agree with banning him from travelling to receive his honorary doctorate in Israel, it must be said that Salem has been ostracised by almost anyone and everyone in Egypt and by banning him, the Egyptian regime has played into his hand. However, the point here is not his ban but the attempt of some of his Israeli friends to portray him as a victim of Arab intelligentsia who refuses to normalise relations with Israel as long as it occupation of Palestinian lands continue. Most Arabs if not the overwhelming majority are highly suspicious of Israeli motives and anyone who gets close to Israel is instantly viewed with suspicions and seen as a puppet of the Israeli state machine. Salem is nothing but a food who naively thought who was doing the right thing by cosying up to the Israeli establishment and only got himself to blame for his humiliation at the borders and the airport. I have no sympathy for him and hope his latest humiliation would serve as a wake up call to others who still harbour any illusion that the Israeli establishment could be persuaded to seek peace with its neighbours. Israel has proved beyond doubt that it is a belligerent state and has no interest whatsoever for living in peace with its neighbours.
