there was Rabbi Zvi Hirsch Kalischer, Rabbi Mohilever who organized Hovevei Zion in 1882, yes, 1882 before Herzl discovered Captain Dreyfus, Rabbi Reines, the Ohr Sameach, who urged Rabbi Avraham HaCohen Kook to come on Aliyah, the Hazon Ish who reached Bnei Brak in 1933 at the behest of leading rabbis in Vilna at the time.. Were these Haredi Rabbis Zionists? Or, were the rabbis who spoke for the Old Yishuv "not Zionists". Or, was Yoel Moshe Salomon, who promoted the establishment of Petach Tikvah in 1869, "not Zionist". Ben Gurion would have, perforce considered them so because they lived in the Land of Israel. What bothers you is that ABY is a serious Secular Jewish thinker, and he takes a position that in step with many Haredim--they love the Land of Israel whatever you call it!. That, my friend, is Zionism, not your cockamamie infrastructure that comes together from time to time to blah blah in Jerusalem about notthing much in particular.
