Compulsory military service is not an act of slavery and its something that still happens worldwide not just in dictatorships. In Switzerland every individual must keep a gun and be ready to called up at a moments notice, fact is the country is to small to rely on a volunteer army. Israel has the same problem, not much point in buying 500 fighter jets and 1000 tanks if you don't have enough people to operate them because you have an all volunteer army. There are hundreds of thousands of reserves in the IDF but there are only about 15,000 volunteers. We get rid of compulsory service we will still only have 15,000 regulars because all these people who were formerly in reserves are not going to change their careers and become soldiers. All volunteer armies are a luxury reserves for countries with very big populations not somewhere like Israel with a total populations which Israel does not. Peace treaties are also no guarantee of security because you can spend 20 years negotiating a peace treaty you can be all smiles think your security problems have been solved but one day all it takes is for 1 side to decide they want to break the treaty and make war. Israel cannot afford to go to a volunteer army until all its neighbours are forcibly demilitarised then we can have only volunteers in the IDF.
