Certainly Israel can get by without American financial aid, but American aid to Israel is something much larger than a few dollars and cents. First of all, American aid to Israel is a direct indicator of the amount of influence Israel has over the American government. This is something which is taken note of all over the world. Secondly, American political aid to Israel is far more important than financial aid. In the past, it has always been assumed that America would make it's UN veto available to Israel on every resolution concerning Israel. This is slowly changing. Thirdly, American military aid to Israel has helped to form the hardened "anti-peace" mentality of Israelis. Even if Israel actually paid for advanced American aircraft with it's own money, America has no obligation to sell those aircraft to Israel. Now just because America were to cut financial aid to Israel, this doesn't mean that America would cut all aid to Israel, but having Americans questioning their aid to Israel is a road that Israel does not even want to consider going down.
