    Aguna (literal meaning: anchored) refers to a Jewish woman who has separated from her husband but can't get a divorce, even if that's what she wants, without first getting permission from her husband. There are many Israeli Jewish women who find themselves in this situation which could go on for years. As long as the woman is "Aguna" she can't remarry because she's neither a widow or a divorcee. You can imagine how some men will abuse this "power" to force women into giving-up their rights in exchange for getting a divorce or for getting custody of their children.
