Netanyahu wishes to present his grandstanding in the US as a signal victory. Actually it is a concession he clawed from Obama in return for agreeing to define his stance on the moribund negotiations. And now with the surfacing of serious differences between him and the president, he is more desperate than ever to paint it back home as a great conquest. But he can’t, because they disagree even when they agree. They agree that Israel’s security and right for self-defense is top issue. But it turns out that Obama’s idea of Israel’s security issues consists of quelling Palestinian armed resistance (what he calls “terror”), and making sure that Palestine will enforce border security that shields Israel against infiltration, while Netanyahu has in mind “demographic changes,” ie expanding the borders to include the settlements. No wonder their meeting dragged on and on.
