Except for a tiny post-Zionist fringe, the underlying rational of the Israeli peace camp is trading the gains of ’67 to secure the victory of ’48. We agree to a Pal state in Gaza and the WB and divide Jerusalem (though, to quote Jewish sources, it would be as if I was severing my right hand and my tongue were cleaving to the roof of my mouth) in order to gain real peace and secure Israel as the one place on earth where the Jewish people has the right to exercise self determination. All that means that Palestinian refugees and their descendants would settle in Palestine not Israel . That deal will be very difficult for Israel but could work, nothing else will. Gidon Levy, Amira Hess, Ilan Papo and Haaretz’s editorial policy are doing Israelis and Palestinians a disservice in that they are creating an illusion in the mind of the Palestinians that there’s a significant number of Israelis who will agree to any solution which includes a massive influx of Palestinians to Israel.
