I am a believer, but I do not abide by the majority of laws - probably because I am lazy and I don't feel "the enforcement mechanisms". But at least I recognise that it is the divinity of our laws that make us Jewish and that they should be followed (in principle). I have heard no alternative/consistent definition of the "essence of Judaism" - which is the main paradox of all Jewish atheists who hang on to their cultural identity.
