Agree 100% with you Tom, your article should not have been written, not because of what you bemoaning, sadly because of what you tried to forget. If Israel is a Democratic State, which means it is a State where the rule of Law is omnipresent, that there are the three main branches that are performing at arms length, thus there is a proper check and balance and that Human rights of every "CITIZEN" is protected, then why do you need an extra "mural" Btslem or Hmoked, which equivalent organisations in Democratic USA or France have to open their books for examination whetner they comply with the rules of Law of their country. Now, by writing your piece, you are actually saying that Israel is not a Democratic State, thus it needs extra "mural" human rights organisation. It might so, then I would assume that your own writings should have never seen the light in Israel: but thi is not so. Your premise is good as long as it is realistic in Israel which is Democracy and you have had such actice Justices like Justice Aharon Barak. Your well intentioned point about helping the poor and the meek is more than a political snuffing of the people, it is the population gathering their conscienness into forming apolitical organisation to come to the help of everyone :Jewish, Christians, Druze or Muslim.
