Zionism was a movement which had as its goal the settlement of the Jewish People within the borders of their ancestral homeland. Zionism was a movement that was to restore the Jew, collectively, to a natural state, where he/she would not be a luftmensch, but a productive agent on their own land, beholden to no one, but a nation in control of its own destiny. Hebrew and Jewish history, as expressed in the Bible and other religious texts were to be the cultural elements around which the national group would coelesce. So much concentration went into this endavour that little if any thought was given to the population that was on the land before the Zionist settlement plan began in earnest. It was clear from its inception that this new Jewish state would be for Jews and the rights of the "other" would need to be subservient to the needs of preserving the Jewish character of this State. Nothing could take precedence over that and that is where comes the rub.
