My (now) Episcopalian cousin was the child of a secular Jewish father and a secular non-believing Englishwoman. The parents agreed that the child should not be saddled with any religious upbringing or instruction. With the result that when she was 16 or so, she rounded on her parents and reproached them for not giving her any religion to reject! Parents don't really win.
