There was Treitschke with his racisim, militarism and antisemitism, there were Virginia pro-slavery professors who claimed slavery was a positive good, and there was the Oxford academics who opined that under no circumstances would they fight for King and Country. They fall victim to the basic flaw of academics: They become so comfortable in their abstractions that they forget to check them against reality, and they arrogantly assume that the calls they receive that the Emperor Has No Clothes derives not from their lack of common sense but rather from their critics' boorish presumption and lack of understanding of their profundities. It's that that allows them to criticize any difficulty of an American traveling to Gaza and overlook the impossibility of a Jew traveling to Saudi Arabia. The idea that Israel is involved in a continuous war, usually low level but sometimes not, with Palastinians, Syrians and Lebanese and has at best an uneasy peace with its other two neighbors is consigned to immateriality by their prejudice and self deceit. Academics who screw up on this level are like priests who sexually abuse children: horrifying because you expected a lot better from them because of their profession.
