If Abbas had been smart he would have made use of Obama when he was in a position to help him. Obama has been backing the palestinian side from the start and he did alot to harm Israel in his attempt to show the arabs whose side he was on but instead of making use of that Abbas refused to talk without preconditions as Bibi has been calling for and so talks never happened. Now Obama is in the middle of an election campaign so Obama is no longer able to help him no matter how much he wants to unless he wants to risk losing votes on election day and Jewish funds for his campaign. Statehood was Abbases to lose and he blew it when he had the chance and Obama was at his peak and had Congress in his back pocket. If he was smart now he would say I am going to defer my UN bid for another year and give diplomacy a chance, he wouldn't get a state before he retired at the November election ( provided he doesn't defer it again ) but the US wouldn't kill his UN big with its veto and if Obama wins a second term I think Abbas can be confident he will go all out to harm Israel and back him at the UN if it comes to that because he isn't worried about being reelected. That would allow Abbas to save face because he wouldn't have top climb down on his threats to go to the UN, it would get the US off his back and if he is lucky Obama will won a second term.
