The real issue never has been getting the two sides to sign pieces of paper, it’s about COMPLIANCE. Abbas’ response to the quartet should be, “when both parties are in full compliance with phase I of the Road Map, the Palestinians will return to the negotiating tables knowing that not only Israel but the members of the Quartet are serious about the peace process.” Obama can sell this at home…he gets to blame George Bush for it. Obama merely states he is executing a previous administrations' obligation. Certainly Eric Cantor can’t have too much to say about that without looking the fool. Similarly Netanyahu gets to blame Sharon for the ‘bad’ deal but is obligated to execute since Israel signed the document. If the US and/or Israel is unwilling to institute Phase I of the Road Map, then the Palestinians have no other recourse but to continue with their UN bid whether Security Council or UNGA since any signed document with the Israelis brokered by the Americans clearly is not worth the paper it is printed on.
