"Abbas said... that he MAY step down this year IF he achieves all his political goals" - Haaretz// Abbas warned a number of times that he will be retiring soon if the peace process does not resume. Now he "MAY" step down, etc, all conditional staements. A number of times he said that there will not be a unilateral declaration of independence. After his desires were not fulfilled, he fell back on Fayyad's plan of getting the UN to declare an independent palestinian state. It is difficult to get a fix on Abbas. At least he shows flexibility, which is more than Netanyahu does, but he seems to ultimately be not aa serious player. I would suggest to him to indeed retire and let Fayyad, a far more competent man, to be elected president of Palestine. Israel needs a solid leader of this important neighbor.
