Hamas will never be a real threat to Israel, since it is not a palestinian nationalist organisation, but is intead an internationalist islamic group that can never get the support of US, Russian or Chinese govts. Abbas, on the other hand, represents the palsestinian nationalist cause, with no other priorities than justice for palestinians, and as such, is capable of getting significant pressure applied to Israel by all non-moslem nations. It is to Israel's tactical advantage to take actions to reduce the credibility and strength of Abbas. Hamas and Islamic Jihad, on the other hand, are just the typical power groups plaguing the palestinian cause that Israel has been able to effectively deal with over the last fifty years.
