Officially, Abbas has the role of "strongman", which is not the best situation for obtaining statehood. Additionally, the Palestinians are split into several major factions, some of which are not represented in the "government". It is all well and good for Abbas to get the world behind him in order to show Israel that there is a new game in town and it is out of their control. It is important that Abbas mend his domestic ties though or the statehood thing will fall apart before it really gets going.
