It is easy for a blind man to touch the two ends of an elephant and identify two very different realities. You came with J Street on a speaking tour and define the Wall as immovable and the Gate as the path to all that is right and good in the world. The Wall is not immovable. People of all religious and political persuasions can be brought together, (if they are unwilling to come together), to hear and even learn how to take part in reasoned and respectful dialogue on the fate of Israelis and Palestinians and the responsibility of the American Jewish community. It is doable because I have not only seen it, but been involved in it. You can influence the General Assembly of 2011 by working in local Federations, synagogues, JCC’s , Hillel’s and other Jewish and non-Jewish institutions to establish and participate in respectful dialogues, (that are moderated by agencies like the Jewish Dialogue Group, here in Philadelphia or the Public Conversations Project in Boston or others), on the future of Israel. Or you can promote an either or philosophy which divides people into two camps who will spend the next generation fighting over the support of one more member of Congress while Jerusalem burns.
