It is true that a smaller percentage of people serve in the Army than once did. It is also true that there has been a change in the character of those who serve. I was surprised that 'Haaretz' did not point out the 'danger' of the fact that a much larger percentage of volunteers and officers are from the National Religious community. The article does not point out the worrisome trend of declining service on the part of the children of certain elites. It also does not point out the decline in service from the Tel Aviv area. For years there has been talk of transforming the Army into a volunteer one. This has to some degree happened but is not completely possible given the threats Israel faces.
