The responses on these forums and in the press to this incident mirror a sad deterioration in Israel. Religious strife AMONGST Israelis is becoming more common. Indeed, it is even happening between Jewish Israelis. Witness the violent response of the Ultra-Orthodox in recent years. Much of this problem I have to lay at the feet of several recent Likud governments. They have allowed, and even abetted, acts of racial and religious persecution and other criminal acts by certain elements in Israeli society in pursuit of the dream of a "Greater Israel" and with the knowledge that violence helps them at the polls. But the fact that virtually NO responses I have read has had anything to do with the reality of the incident shows just how emotional and irrational things have become.
